Davide Fabio Colaci talks about architecture as the masters did: looking at the project as an operation that involves metaphors and symbols. After all, living is a human affair. Colaci knows this well and therefore loves to find meanings to better define the project and the choices that gravitate around it.
He has dealt with houses, interiors, objects. But also has designed exhibitions or theatrical events. Always thinking of architecture as a tool for cultural investigation.
What is laminate for you?
If you say laminate, I think of Zanuso, Gae Aulenti, Memphis and, of course, Ettore Sottsass. They explored the aesthetic possibilities of laminate, used it to experiment in design and architecture and to give expression to a new idea of furniture. The laminate has become, thanks to the work done in the 70s and 80s, an expressive tool. Just think of Ettore Sottsass’s intuition with Fiber, a laminate that mimics a recycled natural material.
What are the reasons why you choose Abet?
Abet produces designed surfaces: an attitude that greatly facilitates the work of architects and guides their choices. I know I can create my own color or print, but if I have a catalog of 500 colors and finishes, I don’t really need to do it. And save time and work.
How is using laminate in interior design?
I think it would be interesting to experiment with them in interiors and custom made furnishings, taking advantage of the compactness of colors and their liveliness for functions integrated into architecture. The places of passage, such as doors and compasses, those parts of the house where you pass from one function to another.
There is a lot of talk about sustainability and laminate is a very strong and durable material. What do you think about it?
I explain to my customers that laminate is a surface made of pressed and glued sheets of paper, so the production is clean. Laminate is resistant, lasts for years, does not age. The laminates are technically eternal. And this is a feature that makes them much more sustainable than many products, materials or surfaces, perceived as more ecological.
A quality, that of durability, which for some is not desirable. Why?
It seems that the ephemeral is preferable, it responds to the need for rapid and continuous changes. Yet solutions can be found that meet this need. We can imagine intervening on laminates and changing their appearance. The idea of repairing and restoring is fundamental when evaluating the sustainability of an artificial product. And in this case it is an excuse to conceive a type.
