NINA MÛR POWERED BY ABET LAMINATI

The history of Abet Laminati is characterised by important encounters with some of the most prominent designers and architects around the world who view laminate as a unique material that is infinitely customisable due to the combination of decors and finishes with, at the onset, serigraphy and later, digital print techniques.

The Piedmontese company has always been adept at tapping into creative impulses that would make an indelible mark on international design, providing support to stylistic and cultural movements like Alchymia and Memphis at the end of the 1970s and beginning of the 1980s. The vocation for technological experimentation and the continuous creative research have also led Abet Laminati to develop an exceptionally rich catalogue that has fed into and contributed to the most perceptive designers in the world throughout its 60-year history. With this type of attention, laminate has taken on a very distinctive identity separate from that of an imitative material.

Laminate has been used to create surfaces and furniture in all types of environments and has been featured in architectural design.

Continuous research into possible applications of laminate in a variety of industries has driven Abet Laminati to accept a new challenge: to collaborate with Nin Mûr, the Spanish brand that produces eyewear made of the highest quality materials.

Through the use of Abet laminates, Nina Mûr has created its first collection and given it an Italian name, Mobile (meaning furniture), as a clear tribute to the world of design and furnishings, in which the company based in Bra (Italy) has always played a leading role.

NINA MÛR

Nina Mûr is a young company. It was founded in Madrid by Lorena Serrano and Davide Fichera, who decided to join forces and experiences in the fields of design, communications and eyewear to launch an ambitious project: the independent production of glasses made of birch wood that are simultaneously lightweight and resistant. Every pair is produced through techniques that blend technology and craftsmanship.

PRODUCT

The line comprises 12 models and 8 colour variants, all made out of wood to which the Abet laminates are applied. One such laminate is Polaris, the anti-fingerprint, scratch-resistant and soft touch surface that comes in neutral colours ranging from the deepest black to white. The distinctive Stars decor from the Evanescence collection has also been chosen for the Mobile Collection: variants with dark colours and a metallic shine similar to graphite.

Over time, the Collection will be enhanced with new models featuring finishes and decors selected from the broad range available in the Abet Laminati catalogue. For summer 2017, Nina Mûr suggests frames in refreshing, bold colours chosen from the dozens of hues in the historic Colours collection.

PRODUCTION

Nina Mûr eyewear is produced exclusively in the Madrid laboratory where frames are cut from sheets of Finnish birch wood. All of the advantages of Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) cutting are joined by many steps carried out manually, including smoothing, painting and buffing the components, until reaching the final assembly stage of the lenses, which can be either optical or sun.

The process of plywood production, from which the frames originate, is totally innovative and original. Nina Mûr uses 27 layers of wood (the same material used in aeronautics) that are joined with phenol glue (the same glue used in sailing) directly in a curved mould for a cycle that lasts 16 hours. Through CNC cutting, an already curved frame is produced. These frames are extremely resistant and the wood grain is visible.

Teaming up with Nina Mûr represents another important chapter in the history of Abet Laminati and opens the future to new projects marked by experimentation and research.
